Vol.72 Tokyo Community Spaces issue
This is our first look at some of the many minimal yet innovative concept stores and community spaces where the location itself has become a medium for creation. The issue will be a +81 guide to 47 creative spaces on all shapes and sizes in Tokyo.
The first of the four main features focuses on progressive bookstores or spaces that have adopted unique concepts for presenting publications. Some specialize in art or typography whereas others carry only rare vintage works, and some even have bars or facilities for guests to stay overnight. The second feature looks at modern shops with a charming retro vibe and a hint of the Japan of yesteryear to them, and in the third we pick up a few fashion-oriented composite concept stores that are linked with restaurants, cafes, or galleries. These two features might seem to cover opposite ends of the spectrum, but we feel that when viewed together they provide an accurate portrayal of today’s trends. We wrap things up with a fourth feature on spaces that embody the handiwork and worldviews of their creators.

+81では初となる、ミニマルでありながらも独創的な東京のコンセプト・ストアや、場所自体がメディア化しているようなコミュニティ空間の数々を紹介する。+81が送る、多種多様なクリエイティヴ・スペースを47軒収めた東京ガイド・ブックとなっている。
大きく分けて4企画で構成された今号の第1特集は、ユニークなコンセプトで本を扱う進化型ブック・ストア／スペースを紹介。アートやタイポグラフィーを専門に扱う書店、レアな古書が揃う店舗、バーや宿泊ができる施設を紹介する。続く第2特集では、どこか和を感じさせるレトロ感が魅力のモダンなショップを、第3特集は、ファッションをベースに、レストランやカフェ、ギャラリーなどが併設された、複合的なコンセプト・ストアをピックアップ。一見、対極的な2企画だが、現代の潮流を反映した第2、3企画は合わせて見てほしい。そして、締めくくりとなる第4特集では、クリエイターの創意工夫が凝縮され、彼らの世界観が表現されたスペースを取り上げている。
また表紙とMAPには、ロンドン出身のイラストレーターAndrew Joyceによる、東京の象徴的な街並を描いたイラストを採用。
